As historian of fascism & Holocaust, I would also call these centers concentrations camps. As a Jewish person who lost family in Holocaust, I regret that some Republicans use memory of the Holocaust to defend racist policies of trumpism. @aoc is right. wapo.st/2WTq6v1?tid=ss…
I think many Republicans can be educated on this by reading books on fascism, populism & Holocaust @ruthbenghiat @mabelberezin @levissullam @jasonintrator @TimothyDSnyderand also the books on camps by Dan Stone, Enzo Traverso & others. There is no lack of biblio here...
and for neo-fascism & extreme right @Andrea_Mammone @CasMudde @milleridriss @C4ARR @odiloncaldeira @yo_herran among many fantastic scholars
Concentration & extermination camps are part of the same history but are not the same. In the history of the Holocaust, concentration camps were first stages of persecution and they started in 1933. In many invaded countries Jews were first concentrated in ghettos and eventually
sent to extermination camps. The extermination of the European Jews, started in 1941 with mobile killing unites and then continued in 1942 with the creation of the first extermination camps.
The first concentration camps in history happened in the late 1890s in South Africa and Cuba...see Dan Stone's book: global.oup.com/academic/produ…
