Arabic Twitter is having a meltdown over whether Islam mandates a state. What if I told you that in the 9th century AD (3rd AH) there were Muslim anarchists who argued that since the state* is tyrannical and corrupt, the best way to implement Islam is to have none?
These thinkers argued that you don't need a state in order to have an organized society. And that in the few cases where you need to have an explicit leader, you can elect one for a specific time & task, and then relieve him. Such as leading prayers or leading a battle.
*Note that classical concepts of statehood are far removed from the modern concept of the state. These debates happened during the Abbasid era, and not very long after the Umayyad era. Both called themselves "Caliphates" but were dynastic empires with one-family hereditary rule.
