/ Fascinating experiment called the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or hi-seas, an immersive simulation in which groups are sequestered in a Mars-like simulation environment on Mauna Loa for up to a year at a time theatlantic.com/science/archiv…
/ Goal is to understand the psychology of selecting, training, managing groups of astronauts in complete isolation as they will be on Mars. Communication is on a 40m delay, no walking outside w/out spacesuit, and no outside contact allowed
/ The fiasco in the article notwithstanding, I really believe Mars exploration/colonization will completely reshape human civilization. Humans are always oriented toward the frontier, and I think not having one is a deep cause of th current malaise
/ I’m reading Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy, and the psychology of settling a new planet with a land surface area equal to Earth’s is a collective-consciousness altering event
/ It seems clear that it will start off as a science settlement, then later mining and resource exploitation. But it’s so far that it will need to eventually develop its own culture, political and economic system, maybe even language
/ It feels like awareness and consciousness of Mars as the next goal for human expansion is rapidly rising. I’m noticing mentions and references everywhere, even outside typical circles. It’s entering the realm of the possible
/ Spending many hours the past few weeks reading about Mars, my problems have felt very small and far away, like my vantage point is on Mars. I think that extending human consciousness to a Second planet will have a similar effect on humanity as a whole
