The NRA has suspended the leadership of its own lobbying arm and is potentially days away from their top media contractor, who provides most of their messaging capabilities, is potentially days away from shutting down their services over a lawsuit betwee the two.
There has been zero public word on where the group moves from here or how/if it's going to replace their top lobbyist and/or media contractor. They haven't responded to my questions. Will they be an effective force in 2020? They weren't in 2018 and things have only gotten worse.
Virginia's special session that's supposed to focus on gun bills is coming up on July 9th. Will the NRA be doing anything for that? I've asked but haven't gotten word back yet.
It's also important to note that the suspended lobbyist, Chris Cox, also runs the NRA's PAC. Without their top media contractor and the head of their lobbying arm and PAC, it's hard to see what capacity the NRA has to influence politics at least for the moment.
I guess NRA leadership is figuring out how to deal with all of this right now? I assume somebody there is looking beyond the internal fight to how they'll recover from all of this as an organization?
If this whole spiraling ordeal at the NRA is confusing to you, you're not alone. Luckily, I just published a piece in the Examiner Magazine explaining everything that's happened at the NRA over the last few months. Check it out here: washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/chaos-…
The piece will also be in the next print edition of the Examiner Magazine but, if you want early access, you can get it early on the website with a subscription. washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/chaos-…
