A COSTLY ROMANCE

Akin finds love for the fifth time under 4 months and he stubbornly doesn't want to let this one go. His new crush Abike lives on the same street so he started putting on his nice shoes to run minor errands but trouble followed this crush.

A THREAD

Dolapo
Guy, why are you staring at that girl like you've been jazzed? You're even licking your lips like a dog, Iyama! See eh, she's way out of your league bruv.

Akin
Way out of my league? You see this babe, I'll definitely shag her. You wan bet?

Dolapo (laughs hysterically)
You… you go do wetin? No be only shag , na broda shaggi. Ode, better go find your mate.

Akin
Why are you so pessimistic?

Dolapo
Me? Pessimistic? Just take a good sincere look at yourself, would you date you if you were her?

Akin
Ermm, what do you mean with that? I'll swag up if that's the case. This babe eh, I go chop am.

Dolapo
I'd love to see you try. I just hope you don't fail like you've done the last five times.

Akin turns to dolapo and stares intensely “why did you have to bring that up

Dolapo
I mean you've been in love like five times in a very short period of time and you always end being in the friendzone. You know what? I think you deserve a throne.

Akin gets angry and walks away.

Dolapo (Shouting)
Bruv, why are you leaving na? Come and start her package, maybe you can get a double friendzoned hatrick (laughs).

Same day, evening.
Dolapo stood outside his father gate, enjoying the cool evening breeze when he noticed Akin coming in from a distance.

Dolapo (thoughts)
Wait fess oh? This guy no tell me say he dai go party this evening.

Akin approaches Dolapo

Dolapo
Sly!! So there's a party somewhere and you didn't bother to tell me? Hold on, make I go change sharp sharp

Akin
Ode
There's no party anywhere.

Dolapo
So what's with your Christmas clothes?

Akin
Can't a young man just look good for his hood?

Dolapo was in the middle of a thunderous laughter when the girl from this morning approached them.

Abike (smiling)
Hi, I like your shoes.

Dolapo went quiet immediately and Akin stuttered continuously in his reply. “than.. thank you, I could give you if you want though”

Dolapo (thoughts)
Ahah, is this one mad ni? Shoe of 3 months savings

Abike
Awwww
That's so sweet of you. You hardly know me and you're already offering me your shoe

Akin
I'm a generous person, and besides it'll look better on you.

Akin quickly ran back home and came back wearing another sneakers and had packaged the other one for her.

Dolapo (thoughts)
What's really going on here! This boy that can't lend me his belt is dashing a total stranger a shoe! Now I know foolishness and love go hand in hand.

Abike [Home, Night Phone call]
Babe, so I just felt like flirting this evening oh and I've landed myself a show of 24k!! I'm really going to enjoy flirting with this guy oh.

Friend
He bought you a shoe or what?

Abike
He gave me his shoe.

Friend
Wow! Abeg enjoy this single life and flirt your life out. Let them spend their money on us jare. Do you like him?

Abike
Nah. I'm just bored. I can use him though. Friends with benefits stuff

Abike and Akin started seeing each other regularly. Jobless Akin at the moment spent all he had on dates. Akin was having the time of his life, he had never been this lucky with any of his previous crushes. At least he thought to himself, “heaven must have remembered me”

Abike on the other hand is a young lady who is waiting for her scholarship to be approved so she would go study abroad for her masters. She was just using Akin to pass time so she kept leading him on with the hope that she'd be gone in a couple of weeks.

It was a sunny morning and Abike was home alone so she reached out to Akin to come over to her place. Akin feeling so excited rushed down to the mallam on the street to buy condom "this morning go make sense" so he thought to himself.

He got there and found her in the living room, half dressed. Her skin was so smooth and her thighs extremely fresh. Akin sat there thinking about what he already has planned out for both of them. Instantly, she kisses him and takes off her top.

The atmosphere became really intense. Akin quickly pulled out the condom in his pocket and wore it and as they were about to start having sex, the doorbell rang, Abike's father was back.

Immediately she heard her Dad's voice, Abike's body dried up and Akin was made to hide in the second toilet until he was able to leave without being noticed.

That same evening Akin steps out of his gate to get bread when he sights Abike in front of her gate with Dolapo.

Both were laughing and it sure looked like they were having a good time.

Akin on his own end wasn't. His entire body, spirit and soul was dying of jealousy. His jealousy grew into anger as he thought of killing dolapo right there on the spot

Abike saw him from a distance and waved at him to join them but Akin grudgingly declined and went back inside

Later that evening, he had a verbal confrontation with dolapo.

Akin.
See guy, you Sabi well say na my girl be that ba. So I go like if you just stay off abeg. I'm not comfortable with you being close with her.

Dolapo
Dude!!
Whatsup with you na?
You don't even trust me again

Akin
Forget trust, just don't talk with her again if you don't want to see my bad side.

Dolapo
Your bad side? You dai alright like this? You guys ain't even dating yet you're already acting so insecure and possessive. You get mental issues, you no just Sabi ni!

Akin
I've sha said my own. Stay off my girl.

Akin walks out of dolapo and goes back home.

After that morning with Abike, Akin wasn't himself anymore. He sought to spend every living minute with her. He'd always stans outside his gate so he'd see her whenever she steps out. If she wanted to get biscuits, Akin was always there to follow her.

Later on, he discovered that she'd soon be leaving the country for her masters and upon that discovery, Akin almost lost his mind.

Akin
This ain't as easy as it seems oh. Even though she doesn't realize this, this girl is the love of my life. Somebody that I'm already dating in my mind already. I'm just waiting for her to realize it and come and take her place in the already existing relationship.

[The next day, morning Phone call]

Akin

Are you at home?

Abike

No. In short, the house is empty. I'm out with my mum, we are shopping

Akin
Alright.

Akin thinks to himself, “what if I can stop her from traveling, won't I just take the chance?

That meins I'd have her forever. I'm addicted already and I won't let her go at all. She's mine!!

He quickly thinks of something to do and like a raging madman, he storms out of his house, enters the compound beside Abike’s and jumps the fence without anyone noticing.

Akin already knows where the house key is kept (under the foot mat). He gained entrance into their apartment and made his way to Abike’s room, and after a frantic search
He finds the international passport he quickly steals it and makes his was out of the house.

Abike didn't realize that the passport was missing until a day to when she'd be traveling. She fainted twice that day as the entire family searched for it without rest.

Her mother put a call through to the immigration office but there was nothing that could be done within the limited time frame. Abike tried contacting the school but the highest she got was one week and after that, registration would be over and her scholarship: wasted.

The one week elapsed and she still wasn't able to get a new passport nor was she able to find the old one.

Akin got a contract in the middle of everything. He was going to have to leave the state for two weeks. For that two weeks away in Port Harcourt

At the end of the two weeks, Abike applied for a job but she'd have to leave Abuja for lagos. She thought to herself, “at least, this is a good compensation and this would definitely lift me out of depression finally

Akin got back and realized to discover that Abike would be leaving Abuja is she got the job. She had told him everything, even telling him that the letter of appointment would come through the mailman.

Day and night, Akin kept checking the mailbox in front of Abike’s home until the letter finally arrived. He quickly stole the appointment letter and Abike was left with the thought that she wasn't qualified for the job.

It was another evening and Akin saw dolapo with Abike again, laughing and gisting outside her gate.

Akin mind couldn't comprehend what was happening so he just made way for his house. Later that night, he confronted Dolapo about what he had seen earlier.

Akin
I warned you expressly to stay off my girl but you wouldn't listen.

Dolapo

Go and fix up yourself and this yeye insecurities and fantasies that you have. She isn't dating you nor is she dating me. We all are just in the boat of friendship together

Akin.
Then I'll sink your side of the boat

Before dolapo could understand what Akin what meant by that statement, Akin had already stabbed him multiple times with a kitchen knife he had in his back pocket.

Dolapo let out a very loud painful scream and before Akin could escape, he was caught but unluckily for dolapo, he didn't survive; he died after a few hours of getting to the hospital from deep internal bleeding.

The police arrested Akin and after much investigations, he confessed to all his atrocities and was charged to court.

When Abike found out, she hurried to the police station to get her international passport and the appointment letter which the police had recovered from Akin.

She contacted the company in lagos but the position had already been filled. She applied for another scholarship which was again successful and left the country to the republic of China with a vow never to return again.
