This is an interesting letter from 🇦🇹 nominated Commissioner Hahn to Juncker about the EU/Swiss negotiation. files.newsnetz.ch/upload//2/3/23…
1. Problems from the EU side: selective application of EU rules by🇨🇭; no adequate State aid regime; insufficient dispute resolution mechanism.
2. Draft EU/🇨🇭Agreement resolves those problems. But Berne is foot-dragging.
3. So need for EU to act to incentivise 🇨🇭 to fall into line.
4. Parallels with Brexit expressly recognised.
Lessons: (a) EU will insist on level playing field and dispute resolution conditions if we want anything like current access to EU markets. So get real about State aid and dispute resolution.
(b) It might be sensible for the U.K. to liaise closely with Switzerland. We share many of the same problems.
