Since Democrats and MSM deliberately obfuscate the issue for political gain, allow me to crystallize a few key points that you are unlikely to hear elsewhere.
No families are currently being separated at the border, unless the 'parent' has a criminal record and/or the child's safety is threatened without separation. That has been the case for more than a year now. Trump stopped it.
When Dems mention child separation, they are harping on old news. Children used to be separated, after 20 days, for a very simple reason. It is the law (Flores decree) that harks back to 1990's. Trump Admin had no choice.
Trump did not want to separate the families, so he asked Congress to change the law. Democrats refused to cooperate because they wanted the issue for political gain. So Trump issued an Executive Order to suspend the law temporarily.
So Trump is the one who decided to keep the families together by suspending a bad law. Rather than give him credit, Democrats shifted gears and started blaming Trump Admin for now holding children in crowded conditions.
Congress still hasn't fixed the law, nor has it allocated adequate funding for detention centers. Dems blame Trump for poor conditions in which children are being held, while insisting they not be separated and hence be kept there.
Trump's latest attempt to deport illegal immigrants who have already been court ordered to be deported (initiative suspended for two weeks to allow Congress to fix the law) is designed to force Dems to get off their butts.
The End
The package includes no wall funding and is focused on the crisis on the border. Democrats, however, have shown little support despite crying out at the poor border conditions the humanitarian aid would help to fix.
