Student loans were a lie, of course, that we fell for because we were assured that a college education was the key to providing us with jobs that would more than pay for the debt.

Turns out they didn't provide economic advantages. So the answer is... to make college... free.
"Free" meaning society as a whole pours more money into this thing. That we've discovered didn't provide us with any economic advantages. And effectively turned a generation of citizens into sharecroppers.
Leftism is the process of identifying a failed process, then deciding that the answer is to make it even bigger.
I'm not against a student debt jubilee. With what we now know about the true "value" of a college education, it's the morally right decision

The problem we find ourselves in is that the political answers available to us want to treat the symptoms and do nothing about the disease
Worse, the only solution we're given is to SPREAD the disease; this is the leftist solution, while the right-wing solution is to simply kick the can down the road, essentially yielding to the spread of the disease.

This describes the last 100 years of politics, if not 400
This is what reactionaries mean when we say there is no true right-wing politics within liberal democracy: it's all shades of leftism.

To be truly of the right is to admit there are differences. There are hierarchies. Our job as humans is to order them the best that we can.
There was a period when the university fulfilled this: the means to maximize the talents of the top, while allowing talented people from underprivileged backgrounds to maximize their potential, too.

You didn't have to be the scion of an aristocrat to be allowed entry + benefit.
But leftism, as usual, has confused correlation and causation. University education has become a cargo cult: it uplifts some people, therefore, it must magically make everyone smarter.

In truth, it's pouring water into cups of different sizes. Many overflow faster than others.
Let me pull this back around to the point.

At some point, college becomes a waste. We have massive evidence of this. Market results. For most people, it is a net negative.
We've far exceeded that point. Band-Aids will only harm further generations. College needs core reform to function.

We should forgive debt. But that just kicks the can down the road. Address the core problem, or we're relieving ourselves at the expense of our children.
