This thread pretends to be a logical argument, but that's sheep's clothing for the moral argument that actually drives it:

"No, you can't go live in space. You're going to stay here. You're going to serve us. And you don't get any say in the matter."
It gives itself away in the conclusion: It's "fruitless" to try to leave. You're not allowed to remove yourself from service. You're *supposed* to be dedicating yourself to new social, economic, and political ideas—i.e. progressive ones.

You're supposed to stay trapped here.
The funniest part of his line of argument is that he's a techno-utopian. So it's not that we can't manage the tech. Therefore he has to come up with a line of argument for why no group would ever want to found a single colony

"Well, it would be unpleasant. So no one would do it"
The explicit goal is to funnel everyone into the cities, which he rightly recognizes as hedonism traps—but believes this is a good thing

Underlying message is that the hives are going to take an immense amount of techno-brainpower to keep running. So... get on that, Elon Musk
In a way, there's an extremely dark truth to this. He's picking up that we're being urbanized, domesticated, cut off from our deep biological impulse to explore, expand, and conquer.

And he *wants* the Rat Utopia. The longhouse. Ballard's "High-Rise."

This is his dream.
