Writing templates aren't training wheels. If we want students to learn to write, we're going to have to accept a much messier and likely more costly process. rethinkingschools.org/articles/the-p…
A huge chunk of Why They Can't Write is about how policy makers and technocrats create more problems than they solve by lurching towards "solutions" that discount the necessity of human labor and human relationships when it comes to teaching and learning writing.
Fads like grit or personalized learning, surveillance like Class Dojo or even the LMS, automated grading, standardized testing, they are all fundamentally at odds with what we know about how writing is best learned, and yet these things are pitched as solutions. They aren't.
I read my own book and weep at the waste and damage being done to students, teachers, schools. It is so avoidable.
