Mueller testifying on 7/17 is awful close to “August” recess, which actually begins on 7/26 and runs through Labor Day. A run out the clock strategy might be to have underwhelming Mueller testimony lead into August recess, get past Labor Day & keep kicking the can down the road.
“I’m waiting for Mueller’s testimony” will be the new “I’m waiting for the Mueller report,” a shield for deflecting impeachment questions. There is no reason to think Mueller will say anything different than what he said in his report or to think the reaction will be different.
I’m against setting up the expectation that we will learn something new from Mueller’s testimony and the accompanying expectation that new information is necessary to open an impeachment inquiry.
Let’s hope so! But Mueller’s presser was followed by a furious effort by Democratic leadership to tamp down talk of impeachment. And the same thing happened after Trump told Stephanopoulos he welcomed foreign interference in 2020.
I hope this happens, but there are a lot of reasons to think Mueller’s testimony will be underwhelming. For this reason I also think it’s worth questioning the assumption that Dems want Mueller to testify as a means of increasing support for impeachment.
