Boris has stabilised his campaign after difficult start to week. On good form at latest hustings for Tory members in Bournemouth last night and Exeter today. Warmer response from audience than Jeremy Hunt, who must wish electorate were general public, not just Tory members 1/
Boris wins easy applause for saying May government was “too defeatist” in EU negotiations & did not spell out what it wanted. Hunt says not much difference between him & Boris on Brexit but Tory activists seem to think otherwise 2/
Hunt wants to debate “the issues facing the country” but Tory members focusing on just one ENDS

Most of no deal debate focuses on economics & "preparedness". What about political implications? UK-EU relations? Big gap in how both sides see it. Short thread. For some time, a cohort of senior EU officials have believed a crisis is needed to "unlock" this phase of Brexit 1/
The thinking goes something like this: No deal would force a "reset." With WTO terms of trade shock, UK would "crawl back" to negotiating table & swallow elements of WA that EU would demand as pre-requisite to talk trade. But this is a flawed, & grossly oversimplified view 2/
As one senior UK officials argues "the idea that the UK would crawl back is a massive misread of personal behaviour & the UK's view of itself." Those who supported no deal would likely double down. UK Govt would have to blame those it thinks led them to no deal - EU? Dublin? 3/

Italy back on leader's agenda - discussed in margins of today's EUCO. What's going on there is far more existential for future of EA & EU than #Brexit & is issue senior officials in Berlin, Bxl fret most about - as toxic combination of econ & pols leave no obv way forward. Thread
A debate is raging across EU over how to address Italy's lack of compliance with EU fiscal rules in 2018 (debt rising not falling; Govt also failed to deliver 0.3% structural adjustment - holding for economic cycle). Nominal deficit in 2020 also looks likely to exceed 3% 2/
This may seem like a technical, narrow set of issues - but they're not. This is, ultimately, about Italy's membership of EA and the stability of the entire Eurozone/EU. Indeed, it's about very basis of legal & economic co-operation that's implicitly embedded in EU's treaties 3/

So ahead of EU leaders meeting tomorrow, time for some good old fashioned Brussels gossip (analysis?) on EU top jobs. Short thread of where things stand. Bottom line: process is stuck - in EP; with "rapporteurs"; and with @eucopresident bilateral consultations with MS 1/
No deal on @EU_Commission Pres this week. A second #EUCO on 30 June now likely to give leaders another shot. Council desperate to strike a deal before EP chooses its President beginning July. Why? Bc if EP goes first, its decision will constrain room for manoeuvre among leaders 2
For eg, one theory is that Ska Keller (Head of German Greens) & @guyverhofstadt will split EP Presidency among themselves (2.5 years each). But this would kill @vestager chances (as both her & @guyverhofstadt hail from lib group). "The first mover has the advantage" says one 3/
