A reminder that Bret Stephens is a virulent racist unqualified to give any advice on reaching past boundaries and creating dialogue. His position is not about inclusivity but dehumanization. And guess what Bret, lots of Americans speak Arabic too and we know khara when we see it.
When it comes to making people feel like “strangers in their own land,” @BretStephensNYT, how am I, an Arab-American, to feel when a respected columnist at the most prestigious publications in my country says my mind is diseased and my culture intellectually stunted?
How am I supposed to feel when @nytopinion hires someone with full knowledge that he openly insulted my heritage and ethnicity in the most nakedly bigoted way? How should I process the fact that my perspective as a woman of color is practically unrepresented in contrast to his?
I didn’t say Bret, as a straight, white, wealthy man, is “diseased” or “stunted.” I didn’t imply that he is less worthy because of an accident of birth that created a straight white male instead of a queer Arab female. I don’t look down on or disrespect Bret because of who he is.
In other words, I didn’t make Bret Stephens feel like a stranger in his own land. He made me feel like one. It hurt deeply to read how he feels about my people, and he never apologized. He was professionally rewarded for it. Yet my politics are supposed to make *him* comfortable?
The only disease of the mind I see is Bret’s inability to treat others with the same respect and consideration he expects for himself. The only thing stunted is his empathy. Hard pass on letting him shape a discussion about marginalization without pointing this out.
