My grandmother was supposed to be married to her 25-year-old cousin in Syria at age 8. Her mother opposed the marriage and on the wedding night, took her daughter and ran to Lebanon. They lived in hiding from the family for years, for fear of honor killing
The reason I think this is cool is because my grandmother and great-grandmother were badass ladies way ahead of their time. My Sunni grandmother ended up marrying my Maronite grandfather, which in Lebanon at the time was unheard of. My family is now 1/2 Christian, 1/2 Muslim.
All my life, my mom and her siblings would pray to the Virgin Mary & cite the Koran in the same breath. My Christian aunts married Muslim men, so some of my family fasts on Ramadan, some on Lent. It all goes back to my great-grandmother, who refused to live by her society’s rules
This trend has continued throughout the years. I have gay Muslim and Christian cousins. Our situation is very unique amid the rampant sectarianism of Lebanon. That diversity is perfectly expressed in these necklaces worn by all the women in my family—generations of rule-breakers.
