Profoundly powerful thread. I'm not advocating storming of Legco but I totally understand and get it. What continues to astound me are the apologists who direct more fury at college kids fighting the most organized authoritarian state the world has ever known. 1/n
What have Hong Kongers every done but at every turn try to manage the relationship as best as possible while CCP gangsters have done nothing but strangle freedom creating bogus charges to jail opponents. I have no time for your repugnant willfully misplaced fury. 2/n
What I find even more disgusting is the absolute defeaning silence from the supposed leading lights of China thought around the world. London is mostly silent while DC thinkers comfort themselves to hold conferences and debate how to manage the relationship convincing 3/n
themselves that they are more enlightened than the oppressed Uighur or hopeless Hong Kong youth. Rather than facing pressure from think tanks to take human rights seriously, Congressman (not exactly known for policy and legislative risk taking especially on China) are 4/n
doing more to challenge China over matters of fundamental values and importance than any supposed enlightened thinker dedicated to values of human rights, democracy, and openness. Even the Trump administration, not exactly a human rights campaigning group has done more 5/n
than the intellectually self congratulatory but morally vacuous thinking class. If Muslims in Xinjiang and democracy advocates in Hong Kong have taught us nothing it is that you cannot manage the relationship and hope for a better outcomes. I want none of the platitudes 6/n
from institutions that preach about the benefits of engagement with China choosing to remain blind and silent about their all encompassing oppression. If you will not speak about these problems and values now, please never speak of them again in any context you hypocrites. Done.
