So it is finally here: reveal day. I am proud to announce I have written a paper with help from a variety of people that comes from a massive leaked database of Chinese CV's that shows just how close Huawei and Chinese state security services are. 1/n telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/07/0…
The paper that I wrote is here and goes into more detail about a very small sub-sample of Huawei employees and their backgrounds and this is important, in their own words describing the work they did for Huawei and Chinese state security 2/n papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
There are a couple of things that are important to note here though I will let the news article and the paper generally speak for themselves. First, these are real people and they do exist confirmed through various channels. Second, the work the do for Huawei and 3/n
Chinese state security goes well beyond Huawei making normal hires and some happen to come from military backgrounds. For instance, Huawei employees list representing or working for Chinese state security or military agencies at the same time as they work for Huawei 4/n
Third, this trove of documentation absolutely contradicts every claim that Huawei has made about being an independent company with no ties to the Chinese military, state, or intelligence gathering services. As @isaacstonefish notes today 5/n washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
general counsel at Huawei who is proclaiming that Huawei is an independent company received a BA, MA, and PhD from the National University of Defense Technology in a technical field and even has research papers listing them as his affiliation but claims Huawei has not links 6/n
Fourth, we have cases where we can tie employee candidates at a meta data level to specific cases of industrial espionage, hacking or similar behavior. In other words, while we do not have video of the specific CV uploading code to a specific router, what they describe 7/n
in their CV matches a specific known incident in both technical work, time, and place. Clearly I cannot say if this person committed the specific act, but it is astoundingly incriminatory. Fifth, for many reasons, what I have written about in this paper is only 8/n
a teaspoon from the ocean. This will be only the first of many papers to come from the treasure trove of data that is distributed in on and offline locations throughout the world just in case anyone has thoughts of trying to locate and destroy it. There are so many targets 9/n
the only question will be where to start. Sixth, I want to give a special thanks to Henry Jackson Society in London for the amazing amount of work they put into this project and look forward to working with them going forward. It saddens me that there are almost no 10/n
US think tanks that I would even consider approaching with the information I have given the refusal to recognize the obvious threat that China poses. As China launches missiles into the South China Sea, rolls tanks through Wuhan, and puts more than 1.5 million Uighurs 11/n
in concentration camps DC thinkers are writing letters about how the US needs to work on the relationship and not think of China as an enemy. Pro-tip: China is keeping data on you and I have it. This is not one paper. This is the kickoff for a lot of great things to come. 12/n
As I have always said, it is perfectly valid to criticize the Trump administration for specific methods, channels, or strategies for how they approach China. Without any doubt, China is the largest threat the US faces. I am not a China hawk. I am simply a realist 13/n
about the cancerous threat the CCP is. I will be working with a team to turn out reports as fast as possible on a variety of topics using this data to serve the public good. At some point, we need to stand with Wuhan, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang in confronting the CCP. 14/n
One last thing: @Huawei, let the games begin. Done.
