Bangladesh is 8 times larger than Sri Lanka (165MM vs 21MM)

Cricket is equally popular in both countries

But SL has a World Cup to its credit. Was a power even in Test cricket not too long ago

Yet B'desh remain minnows some 2 decades after being given test status
Bangladesh is a Muslim country. But with a Hindu / Buddhist heritage

A region where Buddhism was formidable prior to the onset of Islam
Sri Lanka remains a stronghold of Buddhism
Speaks an Indo-Aryan tongue
And much of its people originally hail from what is now Bengal/Orissa

So genetically and culturally there is much that unites Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
Yet Bangladesh today has a PCI of $4K in PPP terms. Sri Lanka is at $12K

Roughly thrice as rich

So Sri Lanka clearly is outperforming in a huge way in many aspects - be it Cricket or the economy
Sri Lanka in addition to its Sinhala heritage, also has a Tamil heritage

About 10-15% of its population has its origins in the Tamil country in India - large chunks of which practice Hinduism
Between Tamils and Sinhalese, I am not sure which community fares better in Sri Lanka

What I have heard is - at least some decades ago Tamils outperformed Sri Lankans

Not sure if that's still true
If I were to compare Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, both have similar PCIs...

Sri Lanka = $12K
TN = About $10K

But an all time Tamil Nadu Cricket team is unlikely to beat an all time Sri Lankan team though SL is barely a third of Tamil Nadu's size in terms of population

There is much talk on Corporate tax reduction in the Indian budget

But we must remind ourselves once in a while that Corporate tax is something worthy of abolition

It is a bad tax in so many ways
First of all corporations are not people. And only people pay taxes

We may kid ourselves into believing that this tax is paid by "corporate" entities

But the brunt is borne by real flesh and blood people -

Share-holders
Employees
and most of all
Consumers
And all of these individuals do pay taxes in other ways

Share-holders do pay the Dividend tax
They also pay tax on capital gains

Despite the corporation getting taxed!

So it is a form of double taxation

Disappointing

Symbolism, redefining the "idea of India" - all that is OK.

Was with Modi on all of that

But Elections have been won. You have won the battle on the "idea of India"

Time to move on now

Discourse can't be perennially stuck on symbolic rhetoric
This doesn't mean that people shouldn't wear their culture on their sleeves. Or be militantly secular. I mean no such thing

Tweet and write about religion and culture In your free time (as so many of us do on twitter), as much as you like
But don't use the budget to make symbolic statements using trivial things like suitcases

And think you are saying something smart.

You are not.

This BJP government under Narendra Modi for a v long time now has been obsessed with "Start-ups"

Boosting growth is so much more than encouraging start-ups

Growth largely comes from scale-enablement. And making the already well established businesses even larger
We don't have a dearth of start-ups and self employment in India

But this is not a sign of strength. People start their own businesses often because you don't have jobs available among corporates

90% of Indians are self-employed. And this is a problem

Confused with such a high demand for teachers in KP, the govt ordered a verification drive only to find that ghost schools and students are almost 30% of the total enrolments. It is not surprising that majority of these came from areas with very high support to Pakistan.
