“Beijing conducts ‘concerning’ ballistic missile testing in contested South China Sea” abc.net.au/news/2019-07-0… IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION: This is NOT a strategic missile (ICBM/IRBM/SRBM) but an anti-shipping missile which takes a ballistic trajectory for part of its flight.
China has led the way with this sort of thing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-ship… I can’t find anything saying what sort of missile it was yet, but here’s a disgram of a DF-21D. Perhaps it was a DF-26. I think @abcnews should have been clearer about this. China is not nuking anyone. 
“Ballistic” just means “moving under the force of gravity only”. Someone walking nearby just threw a carton at me. “Look,” he said, “a ballistic missile”. And he was right.
The important issue in the @abcnews story should* be that it’s a big grunty anti-shipping missile, not that it’s “ballistic”. It’s only partially ballistic anyway. Call it a “carrier killer”, because that’s its mission.

To be fair to @abcnews, they’re only echoing the original international reporting, but still, the headline strikes me as slightly too alarmist. YMMV.
