Does anyone feel they understand precisely why Theresa May was permitted to carry on as PM during the Tory leadership election, rather than an interim PM? Is it that no-one thought it worth forcing her out? Or was it that any interim option seemed likely to be even worse?
I'm not pretending it's a big issue, but doesn't there seem something a bit odd about saying "You're an absolutely unmitigated catastrophe as PM, both for the Party & the country - why don't you stay on a further two months"?
Presumably if we had a purely interim leader, instead of May having carried on, we wouldn't be getting nonsense like this? thesun.co.uk/news/9390360/m…

Reflecting upon the reaction to this tweet. Large numbers of folk claimed the idea we might vote not on the basis of our individual interest but instead on the basis of the long-term interests of our country & of those elsewhere in the world our country wld serve was deranged.+
+It's interesting to ponder why this so upset folk. It surely can't be that they think voting for reasons other than one's personal short-term interests is deranged. After all, lots of folk vote based on how they think the govt will deal with the old or poor or foreign wars.+
+They also can't really have thought there was something odd about thinking of the country's long-term interests as opposed to the next few years. They might disagree with this prioritization, but it couldn't really be described as deranged.+

So apparently Carrie Symonds' furious the police were called, seeing it as politically-motivated, & apparently she was very much on edge because she suspected she might hv bn raped when young by the black-cab rapist Worboys (who drugged her). Are you all proud of yourselves now?
This may also be part of the reason Boris deflected all qstns on this today - he didn't want to hv to go into details abt Carrie's fears. But *obviously* he was the bad guy, right - what with being rich & a Tory & sounding posh & going to Eton & all that?
An awful lot of you are shameful folk who ought to take a long hard look in the mirror & reflect, for yourselves, how it is that you have become such prejudiced, nasty, unpleasant people.

I haven't heard the tape, & know nothing not public, but here's what the reports I've read suggest was the rough sequence of events.+
+Boris is on the sofa on his laptop, presumably reading Tory election news. He upends his wine glass on the sofa. He jumps up. Carrie jumps in to try to clean up to rescue her sofa.+
+It's not the 1st time he's done something like this. He's slovenly & careless. She tells him off as she cleans, saying he's always doing things like this because he's rich & entitled & has no respect for other people's possessions. She's sick of it.+

I'm going to go off my normal rational path and go for a mad Friday afternoon prediction: May could quit next week, probably on Wednesday morning.

Core Assumption: May's botched deal gets voted down big time on Tuesday, predictions including the BBC say she could lose by over 200 votes. If that happens she's broken as Prime Minister. Convention before the Fixed Term Act would have meant a general election straight away.
But because of the Fixed Term Act she doesn't have to go. Also because of Ress-Mogg's badly timed leadership challenge the Tory party can't get rid of her until next Xmas. So why do I say she will go?
