Having tweeted once about the people yelling that a magic fish girl is black now, I'm getting a wave of people telling me they're too busy caring about important things to care about this.
If you're so busy caring about the really important things, why do you care what one fantasy novelist with a reputation for writing about mermaids thinks, professionally, about a rare mermaid-related controversy?
Also: if you have creative people in your lives, this is why we're all depressed and squirelly right now. We KNOW there are children in cages. We KNOW the weather is broken. We get up in the morning and call our reps just like you (presumably) do. And then we go to work.
But for us, "going to work" means sitting down at a keyboard and lying to ourselves, vigorously, for six to eight hours. We lie to ourselves so we can lie to you. "This has meaning," we say. "This is still important."
I have spent every day since the election asking myself whether my work has value, because when I say anything frivolous or silly, someone's right there to screech "THE WORLD IS BURNING" as if I could possibly not know.
If you don't yell at your dentist for talking about teeth, please don't yell at me for talking about mermaids. I can't put my professional life on hold until the world is no longer a dumpster fire. I do my part, and then I go back to Fairyland so I can pay my bills.
And if you can't do that--if you must aggressively remind people that we aren't allowed to care about things you don't agree matter--please stop consuming our lies. No more movies, no more TV, no more books or comics until the world is burning less.
Make the pledge not to consume any fiction until you feel we've earned it back, and then you can yell at me for caring about mermaids.
Update: fascinatingly, no one has volunteered to make this pledge.
