Johnson: "There are parts of the country where English is not spoken by some people as their first language and that needs to change".

How does he plan to change it? Mass deportations?

Astonishing number of people replying to/commenting on this tweet who couldn't be bothered to read it/don't understand English very well.

Johnson complained about people not speaking English *as a first language*. English language classes won't help with that.
More seriously, even in the most highly diverse areas, vast majority of UK residents speak English well or fairly well, even if it's not thir *first* language.

So this is pure dog-whistle by Johnson, even leaving aside the logical failure.
There is no local authority area in the UK where fewer than 90% of residents speak English well.

Short thread on why (despite sounding like common sense) this is not "simple economics" at all. In fact, simple (trade) economics says that abolishing tariffs, while at the same time export on WTO terms (ie our exporters face higher tariffs) will not affect the trade balance.
Why? What does “simple economics” tell us will happen here? Well, abolishing import tariffs will make imports cheaper, while moving to WTO rules makes our exports more expensive in foreign markets. So we’ll sell less and buy more? No. (2/10)
In fact, simple economics – International Trade 101 – tells us that with a floating exchange rate, as the UK has – the £ will fall. This will make imports more expensive and exports cheaper, counteracting the impact of tariff changes. (3/10)

Roger Scruton, defending Enoch Powell, "wrongly" charged with racism.

If @DouglasKMurray, @toadmeister, @spikedonline etc had any intellectual/moral integrity, they'd just come out and say they're absolutely fine with this sort of poison, rather than attacking @georgeeaton
In same article, Scruton also claimed it's *impossible* for *British-born" Muslims to be loyal British citizens:

"the art of believing six impossible propositions includig that pious Muslims from the hinterlands of Asia would produce children loyal to a secular European state."
Also, for those arguing Scruton's racism is irrelevant to a job as government advisor on housing:

"The stock of social housing once reserved for the indigenous poor is now almot entirely occupied by people whose language, customs and culture mark them out as foreigners"

@bbcnickrobinson @HenryNewman That's wrong, Nick. Treasury spending/borrowing plans rely on OBR forecasts of future tax revenues which in turn rely on OBR forecasts of future growth.

@bbcnickrobinson @HenryNewman What we can say with certainty is that the government/HMT *cannot* make spending plans on the basis of a "Brexit growth dividend": it is legally required to make plans on the basis of the OBR's forecasts, which incorporate a significant growth hit.
