A thread for one of my musical heroes, the late Joao Gilberto, whose music has given me so much joy for these last few decades. Let's start with his first album, Chega De Saudade (1959).
At this point, everyone knows the story: Bossa Nova was the place where the samba met the harmonic sophistication and relaxed vibe of jazz from Los Angeles and the west coast of the US. In 1959, when this record from Joao Gilberto hit, it sounded like absolutely nothing else.
Gilberto's laid back vocal delivery didn't knock you over the head; he whispered and purred. It was a sound that would, soon, spring forth from Brazil and get inside the ears of millions of people around the world, thanks to this 1963 LP.
