Working in a Fertility/Endoscopy specialty hospital, Let me share some facts and myths about fibroid and infertility, FAQs by some women.

Patient: Doc, they said fibroid is a spiritual attack/manipulation.

Me: No! Fibroid is a benign gynaecological tumour that grows in the womb. It can be handled and removed. It is never a spiritual spell and won't disappear by binding and casting the devil.

Patient: Then, why is it common among black women?

Me: Among other reasons, black women are found to have a higher level of oestrogen that supports fibroid growth and same high level of oestrogen is the reason why blacks are more fertile than Caucasians.

Patient: Doc, is it true that a woman that has fibroid can't be pregnant?

Me: No! It is not true. The effect of fibroid on fertility depends on the location and size of the fibroid. It is good to remove the fibroid early before it affects the entire womb.

Patient: I have fibroid but the scan Man said it is not in the womb.

Me: All fibroids except a rare one called ligamentous fibroid, r in the womb.
However, the womb has 3 layers; outer, middle n inner layer. It is those at the outer layer that he referred to as outside the womb

Patient: I heard that if the fibroid is removed, it will come back again.

Me: Every womb that produces fibroid has a tendency of regrowth but not immediately. With the aid of uterine artery ligation; a surgical technique, the chances of regrowth has been reduced to near zero.

Patient: Doc, what are the red alert during menses?

Me: Anytime your menses comes out in clots/lump, flows for more days than the usual pattern and feeling of tiredness or dizziness that's a red flag.

Patient: I heard of some pills and herbs that can dissolve or melt fibroids.

Me: There's no known drug or herbs that can take fibroid out of the womb except by surgery.
If anyone claims his/her product melts or dissolve fibroids, before you use it, go for Pelvic scan..

..This will help you measure the sizes, then keep a copy and start the product. However, wisdom demands that after taking the product for a month or whatever you allow them to do on your body, do go for check up on your own and repeat the pelvic scan..

..If the fibroid sizes remain the same, you don't need a prophet to know you're being deceived. Such herbs and pills have made many women put their kidneys and liver at risk of failure. Be careful of what you drink!!!

Patient: Doc, then what are the types of procedures for fibroid removal?

Me: Open surgery, Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic removal of fibroids. ( The last 2, do not require an open cut on the abdomen, no blood transfusion, minimal hospital stay.)

Very soon, I will share with us the scam called "Cryptic Pregnancy" that is thriving in Eastern part of Nigeria and gullible Women are now victims of such scheme.
