NEW: Justice Dept says a new team of lawyers from the civil division will take over the 2020 census cases. Spox says AG appreciates the service, integrity & professionalism of the old team & expects “the new team will carry on in the same exemplary fashion as the cases progress.”
We don’t know yet why this decision was made, whether old lawyers didn’t want to work on the cases any more or whether Trump tweets played a role. We will find out more from filings Monday about who’s on the new team & whether it’s career lawyers or all political appointees.
@rickhasen says the move is “ominous” and suggests “it almost certainly means the career attorneys working for the Department of Justice refused to go along with what Trump wants to do now with the citizenship question on the census.”
