Some thoughts about campaign against von der Leyen. Thread.
- EP vote is for real. If she loses, she‘s out. EUCO would need a new candidate.
- Those who reject her should explain why plan B would work + be preferable. Is there a reasonable alternative? I don‘t think so.

- Reopening full package looks impossible: Michel (ALDE) + Sassoli (S&D) have been appointed by EUCO/EP. Lagarde needs EP hearing but is uncontested. So it’s only about Commission.
- Logically, to ensure balance + legitimacy of package, Commission President must be EPP.

- This excludes Vestager + Timmermans who would have been good but no longer fit.
- Only choice would be Weber. But he didn‘t convince and lacked EUCO and EP backing.
- Remarkable: SPD opposed Weber although Spitzenkandidat - and now opposes vdL because no Spitzenkandidat.

- If you can‘t go back to Spitzenkandidaten, what’s the strategy behind rejecting vdL? Who would be plan B? EUCO would have to find a strong European profile from EPP with multipartisan backing + extensive executive experience. Preferably a woman. Well, that’s von der Leyen.

- Lastly, vdL rejection game isn‘t only half-baked, it’s also dangerous: EU would face institutional + political crisis. Eurosceptics would jubilate. In view of this, I don’t get why some pro-EU MEPs campaign against von der Leyen. Like her or not, she is a sensible choice.
