This piece doesn’t mention any actual issues that separate Trump from the GOP-just that they found him uncouth-and doesn’t note that there has been very little daylight between the Trump agenda and Ryan’s/McConnell’s./1 washingtonpost.com/politics/new-b…
Other than trade, where the caucus is divided, Trump has not asked the GOP legislators to step outside of their comfort zone. He has pushed issues they supported long before he came on the political scene-tax cuts, ACA repeal, conservative judges, etc. /2
Maybe the GOP caucus is strongly behind Trump because his agenda, such as it is, is in almost complete accord with theirs, as is his xenophobic, “tough” rhetoric, which, Trump admits, is descended from the Tea Party and, I would add, from talk radio./3

While he was in the White House, Bannon browbeat members of the "freedom caucus" to take away health care for millions and cut taxes on the rich. Not very "populist."/3

In most of the profiles I've read of him, Scaramucci describes his upbringing as "middle class" and says his father paid for his private university education at Tufts. /3

Seems like a good idea to take Trump's red-baiting, evidence-free charges against the Democrats and then to "fact check" the Dems. Given Trump's record of probity, I can understand the Times' obligation to do this./1 nyti.ms/2StfVHX
First, how does one even go about fact checking a claim like Trump's view that a vote for the Democrats will lead to "the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American dream”? /2
But more importantly one can't "fact check" such claims without putting them in historical context. Indeed, one can and should "fact check" similar charges that have been made in the past to see how well they stand up. /3

A few observations about the affidavit:

* It's dated December 2017, pre-indictment, seeking arrest warrant and criminal complaint.
* Appears to be based mostly (if not wholly) on Manning-"NF" chat logs that have been publicly known since 2011
* FBI: "NF"=Assange
Prosecutors have long believed "NF" to be an Assange pseudonym in these chats, short for "Nathaniel Frank."

1. We are offered two distinctly different messages in response to the political actions and climate of the Trump era. Two fundamental philosophies that will shape the course of our country:

We Are Better Than This
vs.
It Doesn't Matter, We Won
2. One, an optimistic appeal to the integrity of the people of our country, offers hope for the future. The other hints at a slippery slope with no bottom. The end justifies the means no matter the cost. I find it doubtful this dark message is what Republicans teach their kids
3. There's no daylight between Trump and #GOP leaders who've have had 2+ years to decide who they are - those of character have already left the party. The rest have gladly molded themselves into Trump’s vision, fully embracing fear-mongering, nationalism, division and lies.

1. This idea that some #GOP have that the DT’s risky behavior is worth the risk because of the potential gains needs some tempering. In fact, the idea that DT would bring some flair for fortune-building from his business acumen was always dangerous.
2. For starters, there are few similarities between running a country and running a business and even fewer similarities between ‘business deals’ and global relations, foreign trade and the balance of power. And the latter issues, our POTUS barely comprehends.
3. #GOP leaders know this, but they’re still clinging to this monster of their own making. Let’s face it, 2 #SCOTUS seats, Ryan’s coveted #taxscam and busting up the #ACA is almost worth the destruction of the global economy, peaceful alliances, even their party, worth it.

Since there is a modicum of interest, when time allows I'll be going through the studies referenced in Krauss & Siri-Tarino's paper. These studies don't have uniform results and it's important to allow for heterogeneity.
However, as it relates to heart disease specifically, it is important to understand the normal distribution. If something is truly mildly harmful, we would expect results of studies investigating it to show a few beneficial results, mostly harmful effects and a few neutral.
If something were really harmful, the skew would be away from ever showing beneficial effects. That said, I'll start with the first reference in S-T and K's paper, the Western Electric study. Published in 1981, it looked at 1900 men followed prospectively for 20 years.
