Let me tell you about a wonderful bookshop, and a wonderful pub, hidden away up a side alley in a quiet English seaside town

Bear with me...
...I’m in Falmouth, Cornwall, in the south-west of England. One of my top two favourite parts of the UK...
The town has a beautiful harbour, in what is some of the most stunning coastline you can imagine...
I’ve just been on a boat, pootling up the Truro river as the sun set...
As we arrived back into Falmouth harbour, there was only one place I wanted to go. It’s just a short walk from the Prince Of Wales Piet Landing. You look out for the tiny alleyway, with the lights and gentle sound of voices...
At the end of the alleyway, in a small courtyard, is an old building which is home to the pub, and also the bookshop...
Inside, the pub is cosy with a gentle buzz of conversation... I buy a pint of a German Helles bier, cool and refreshing after a long day... and then decide to wander across to check out the bookshop...
...fortunately, that’s easy to do...

Because the bookshop...

.... is in the pub!
Cheers!...
They’ve got a superb selection of books... here’s a random selection from the table nearest me...
They’ve got fiction, of course... and people are browsing with their drinks and discussing the books they find...
But this is their selection just for art and design books!
And, given where we are, if you want books about boats - this is your place...
You can pick books from the shelves and read them at your table with your beer, but if you want to take them away you buy them - it’s a bookshop rather than a library...
Yes, I have a feeling I may be leaving with more books as a result 😉
I’m having a go at seeing how wide ranging and random a selection I can bring together...
You could lose days in this place, finding subjects you never knew you needed or wanted to learn about, and classic books you want to dive into...
Independent booksellers like this are so wonderful to find, but so easy to take for granted and forget when we just quickly buy a book online.
It’s wonderful to see an innovative idea like this - mixing where people socialise with where they browse and buy books...
Every independent bookshop is a vital part of its community though. Why not look up your nearest one here: booksellers.org.uk/bookshopsearch and pay it a visit this weekend?
I’m here browsing and beering (and then buying books) for the next half an hour. Happy Friday night everyone!
