There is a humanitarian crisis at our southern border that has been exacerbated by the policies of this Administration. This Administration’s policy of separating children from their parents goes against our values as a Nation. casey.senate.gov/newsroom/relea…
Asylum seekers who have fled violence and persecution should not be subjected to unhealthy, unsanitary or unsafe conditions under any circumstances.
This is why I am proud to support the Stop Cruelty to Migrant Children Act, which would ensure humane standards of care and safety for migrants.

Every day we see evidence of the impact of climate change – forced migration, increased instability and food insecurity and declining economic growth. President Trump’s methane rule roll back is a gift to energy companies mortgaged on the future of our kids and the planet.
U.S. Farmers are on the front lines of the of climate change, facing increasing droughts, floods, extreme temperatures, severe storms and shifting pest and disease pressures. Farmers can also play a role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and storing carbon.
We need to support farmers to ensure they have the tools they need to be leaders in the fight against climate change.

@SenatorShaheen has worked tirelessly in recent months to press the US government to ensure women’s participation in the Afghan peace talks as well as preservation and promotion of women’s rights in Afghanistan post-US withdrawal, as laid out in her FY20 NDAA Amendment.
As Co-sponsor of @SenatorShaheen’s NDAA amendment, as well as author of previous legislation requiring DOD to report on women’s rights and security in Afghanistan, I am disappointed that this Administration is rushing toward withdrawal.

Today, the 9th circuit dismissed an appeal by the U.S. Government seeking to overturn a ruling that migrant children in U.S. custody must be provided with edible food, clean water, basic hygiene items and appropriate sleeping conditions.
The court found, among other things, that minors (1) were “not receiving hot, edible, or a sufficient number of meals during a given day,” (2) “had no adequate access to clean drinking water,”
(3) experienced “unsanitary conditions with respect to the holding cells and bathroom facilities,” (4) lacked “access to clean bedding, and access to hygiene products (i.e., toothbrushes, soap, towels),” and

This week we inspected conditions at the Rio Grande Valley border sector. It’s the busiest sector for unauthorized entry into our country.

We received a briefing from @CBPRGV Chief Rodolfo Karisch.

He gave us an update on the current status of the humanitarian crisis at the southern border.

Border Patrol agents are giving it their all, but until we fix the underlying causes, the crisis will continue.
Border Patrol agents showed us the Rio Grande Valley Central Processing Center.

This facility opened in 2014 under President Obama. At the time, it was hailed as the "gold standard" of border facilities.

This “border zone” has almost nothing to do with our international borders. It encompasses a huge swath of the country, even places like Richmond, VA. Nearly 2/3 of the U.S. population lives in the 4th Amendment-free “border zone.”
Did you know a border patrol agent can pull you over in Harrisburg, PA, for “appearing dirty,” or for no reason at all? The warrantless/suspicionless, and way-too-expansive “border zone” is an affront to our Constitution and must be reined in. theintercept.com/2019/01/07/cbp…
We already know CBP’s interior checkpoints are a waste of finite resources. CBP set up two in VT in recent months. The first netted ZERO arrests. The second resulted in one arrest–for a visa overstay–and only after nearly 900 cars were stopped. vtdigger.org/2019/05/05/bor…

11,432 children are currently being held in U.S. custody.
Former First Lady Laura Bush called the Trump administration’s "zero tolerance" policy, which separates families when they cross the border illegally, "cruel" and "immoral."
