Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but Sacks is, after all, an authority on matters biblical, and I think he is referring to the parable of the prodigal son

Consider this:
God = the EU
Younger, prodigal, son = UK
Elder son = other EU countries

UK, the prodigal son, takes his inheritance, LEAVES home. Brexit is a financial disaster.

@HardLineDemocat @thaumag Later (in 2022 according the plan buried in May's Surrender Treaty), the prodigal son, comes crawling home to God/EU prepared to be a servant. His is welcomed home by his Father (though his elder brother is not so happy).

@HardLineDemocat @thaumag Whether or not the parable works for you, the fact is that - assuming the UK does leave on 31 Oct - there are very strong forces which will do all in their power to ensure that Brexit IS a disaster, to prove that the son/UK is prodigal.
