@regthecat_photo @GuidoFawkes The claims about Lansbury refer to "Pacifist Attitudes to Nazi Germany, 1936-45" by Mark Gilbert, Journal of Contemporary History, Vol. 27, No. 3 (1992). Lansbury was naive in his assessment of Hitler in 1937 - but Edward VIII and the Mail were positively enthusiastic!

@regthecat_photo @GuidoFawkes Lansbury and the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) never envisaged surrender to Hitler. Their pre-Sept 1939 appeasement sought to avert war with Germany, eg by offering concessions such as colonies which Germany had lost at Verseilles in 1919.

@regthecat_photo @GuidoFawkes It's true that Lansbury refused to see the reality of Nazi brutality against the Jews at Kristalnacht (Nov 1938). But Lansbury was a sick man and died in May 1940. So the claim that he called for Britain to disarm after WW2 started and surrender to Hitler is 😡

@regthecat_photo @GuidoFawkes The 1992 article by Mark Gilbert is largely about John Middleton Murry, who was prominent in the PPU after Lansbury's death, and did admire aspects of the Nazi regime. But this caused a split in the PPU.
