1/7 The UK is filled with millions of decent people who voted leave or voted remain or didn't vote but have all united behind the idea that we must do Brexit because that's what the majority chose in 2016.
2/7 This would be an honourable position if: a) three years hadn't passed, during which time no one can find a version of Brexit that the majority of voters want; b) public opinion hadn't changed; and c) this were just about Brexit.
3/7 But none of these things is true. The last is perhaps most worrying. Take a look at the Twitter timelines of the most prominent campaigners and financial backers of Leave dot EU. Look at the content. Look at the tone. Look at the poisonous aggression and the triumphalism.
4/7 Ask yourself if these people are really that concerned about the EU per se. Ask yourself if they care about the so-called "left-behind", a totemic term they cynically invoke to shut down debate and paint those opposed to Brexit as a sneering metropolitan elite.
5/7 Or is pushing it through just the first in a series of authoritarian, Trump-like steps they've designed to deregulate society so the rich can further exploit the poor?
6/7 Of course, the EU isn't some sort of divine institution run by the saintly and wholly virtuous. It has its flaws and some of the criticisms it faces are valid. But it's underpinned by a general sense of fairness and protection of people's rights.
7/7 If these people get their way, the EU isn't all that they'll trash.
