As in 2015-16, parallels w/ Milosevic are useful. Milosevic turned Serbia into one-family criminal buffet, started 4 wars. But he convinced significant # of Serbs he was doing it to “defend” them from Albanians/Bosniaks/Croats/Americans etc. His underlings still run the country.
You can rob a lot of folks blind if you just keep them high on hate, fear, rage. It’s what every authoritarian-nationalist ever has figured out: just give folks some marginal, deviant, precarious group(s) to lash out against & you can rip the gold from grandma’s fillings w/ thx.
I had a short essay on this subject in 2016. I think this sentence still resonates most, and captures the most sinister qualities of the present: "Milosevic based his political programme on two principles: nationalist populism and plausible deniability." medium.com/@balkaninsight…

It’s dawn in #Srebrenica. While July 11 has become part of global human rights discourse, two pts: 1. Srebrenica was not an isolated event but the culmination of a wider Bosnian Genocide. 2. Genocide denial increasingly rampant in Balkans, actively promoted by the Serbian state.
Both of these are important pts typically lost in the international coverage. Yes, Srebrenica was a genocide but it was only one horrific episode in a nearly 4 yr program of extermination and expulsion, the appropriate term for which is the Bosnian Genocide.
Many of the same actors, and their direct political descendants, responsible for planning and executing the Bosnian Genocide are today instrumental in the organized campaign of revisionism. Now as then, it’s all emanating from the top of the political leadership in Belgrade.

I won’t post photos but “markings” many are noting on the #Christchurch shooter’s weapons are historic battles & leaders popular w far-right extremists including, in Cyrillic, “Miloš Obilić”, 14thC Serbian knight who killed Murad I @ 1389 Battle of Kosovo, also a far-right trope.
In other words, this has all the markings of a Breivik-style far-right extremist, likely explicitly neo-Nazi judging by some of his images, steeped in toxic, faux-historical narratives about “defending” white Christendom; hence references to Obilić, 1683 Battle of Vienna etc.
One more thought: the shooter makes repeated references to the “remove Kebab” meme, which is based on a propaganda video produced by Serb nationalist forces during the Bosnian War & Bosnian Genocide in 90s. Meshes w/ Obilić references & clear Breivik influence.

This is a pretty detailed report that meshes w. ongoing disinformation campaign by HDZ leadership in Zagreb & is being reported by reliable media outlet w. strong record of working w. Western media (e.g. provided background for Guardian on stories). So, very disturbing news.
Significant follow-up: Bosnia's Security Minister -- an ethnic Serb from RS opposition -- confirms media reports of CRO intel op, implicates members of RS govt-controlled RTRS public broadcaster in the effort to spread accompanying disinformation. Yikes. faktor.ba/vijest/mektic-…

Thread:Germany and its citizens had to come to terms with the horrors committed in their name, in order to become the regional power they are today. No, not every German shot Jews, but every German had to be aware that it was done in the name of their superiority and victimhood.
The propaganda kept Germans blinded during the war, but they nonetheless had the duty to become aware of the horrors once they were committed. They had to open their eyes. Come to terms with what happened. Why it happened. And then how not to repeat it.
The perpetrators had to be held accountable, with no sense of victimization. Only because draconian measures were imposed after WWI or b/c of the crimes of the Red Army after WWII, no Nazi became less of a Nazi. The crimes of the others didn't justify the crimes of their own.
