It’s dawn in #Srebrenica. While July 11 has become part of global human rights discourse, two pts: 1. Srebrenica was not an isolated event but the culmination of a wider Bosnian Genocide. 2. Genocide denial increasingly rampant in Balkans, actively promoted by the Serbian state.
Both of these are important pts typically lost in the international coverage. Yes, Srebrenica was a genocide but it was only one horrific episode in a nearly 4 yr program of extermination and expulsion, the appropriate term for which is the Bosnian Genocide.
Many of the same actors, and their direct political descendants, responsible for planning and executing the Bosnian Genocide are today instrumental in the organized campaign of revisionism. Now as then, it’s all emanating from the top of the political leadership in Belgrade.
And especially because this is the first #Srebrenica anniversary since the terrorist attack in Christchurch, we must all educate ourselves about how far-right extremists (mis)appropriate history to sow fear and hate, and, ultimately, justify violence. balkaninsight.com/2019/03/22/why…
Finally, Srebrenica is not merely a Bosnian tragedy. It is a warning of what happens to any society when you allow fear & hate to become the defining feature of political & social life. A warning, I confess, many do not appear to be heeding today, in the Balkans and beyond. /x
