AT&T has been caught repeatedly selling customer location data, despite the company's claims that it will end the practice.

Today we launched a class-action lawsuit to help AT&T customers stand up against this violation of privacy. Here's why. (thread)

AT&T not only failed to obtain its customers’ express consent to sell their locational data—it created an active marketplace that trades on its customers’ real-time locations. And the number of third parties with access is staggering: vice.com/en_us/article/…
This access was first reported in @NYTimes when journalists there determined that Securus, a company that monitors and provides calls to jails, allowed law enforcement, without a court order, to track people's locations via their cell phones.

The federal law protecting your locational data is extraordinarily strong, but AT&T has ignored it. Not only has AT&T made it easy to buy—they've sold it to everyone from stalkers to car dealers:

AT&T has violated the privacy rights of tens of millions of AT&T customers.

Location data can be incredibly detailed and provide a window into people’s most sensitive and private activities. Companies with access to it have a legal duty to protect it.

It's time to ensure that location data is no longer so easily sold and that laws are enforced to prohibit it from happening again. Learn more about the lawsuit here. (/thread) eff.org/cases/geolocat…
