I sincerely hope that Trump's appalling & explicit racism will not blind us to the fact that federal courts found just a few yrs ago, that the legislatures of Texas & North Carolina passed legislation for the purpose of disenfranchising minority voters. That is also racism.
Let's not encourage the comforting view that racism is only the explicit bigotry spewed by Trump. Legislatures that pass laws to keep their fellow Black & Latino citizens from exercising the highest expression of our citizenship- also wage an ugly challenge to our American-ness.
In the past 5 years federal courts have found in case after case that voting schemes in multiple states and counties were intentionally designed to discriminate against Blacks & Latinos. This has been as serious an erosion of democratic values as Trump's vitriol.
