I think the replies to this have missed the point. Bavaria, Lower Saxony and California are not sovereign nation states, so likening them to Britain in a future USE actually makes Hannan's (and Leavers') core point. /1
Remainers - at least as experienced on Twitter - consistently get in a muddle and contradict each other over this very core Leave point. Which is perhaps why it still has 'legs'. /2
Remain replies either:
1. Dismiss it. "There'll never be a USE - fanciful guff". Or...
2. Confirm it. "Yes, bring it on. Bavaria, Vermont etc are doing great." And...
3. Reframe the point as cultural - "the British will still be British i.e. tell jokes; eat fish n chips." /3
It is rare for Remainers to confront directly the "country called Europe" thing and the consequent feared hollowing out of sovereign statehood. Which is at least odd given that this is the nucleus of
Brexitism. /4
Indeed as it's so core to Leavery, arguably it should be the *only* point Remainers engage with.

Or maybe they can't? /ends
