Sad edu reality. We are poised to migrate off a system we built 9 years ago to do media management. We are moving to our next media management system. 9 years ago ppl said they needed one space for all this stuff. We are retiring the system that still, no one has been given.
If u keep buying instead of building, browsing vendor zoo instead of investing in your people, you will continue to have poor clugy ux of boxes stapled together claiming to be a house. The other sad reality is even when you have vendors, you still hire ppl but they r disempowered
I recall a discussion recently with a product manager. He so desperately wanted to build and own something. I could hear it in his voice, the desire to live in the world we live, working with ppl to build the future. It's not hard, just trust your ppl and future longevity.
Small group w.o. funding? I get it. But if your in a purchasing position, buy only what you could never envision innovating in (email for example). But if all we do is use email from vendors well never have the thing that could usurp it. Chase the unknown.
Is everything always Rosey? No. Do things need fixing at times? Sure. But you'll have yourself to call, not a hotline. You'll have your best interests in mind, not the board. Care enough about the students to demand better for them, not shareholders.
