As we learned from @ACLU this week, the Trump admin has continued to systematically separate kids from their parents, despite being ordered by the U.S. District of So. CA to stop. The companies profiting from this practice are listed here w/ contact info: grabyourwallet.org/Action%20Alert…

I hate to be the “hey guys it’s just a movie” guy but a lot of these Once Upon a Time in Hollywood reviews are straining awfully hard to see things that I think may not be there.

(More pretentious version: the movie is an elaborate joke about film critics)
I liked it. A lot. The flamethrower gag is hilarious. The Bruce Lee subplot is great. All the actors are excellent. The music is cool. The costumes are cool. Everyone is sexy as hell.

Everyone had fun watching even though it’s dumb, just like Bounty Law was widely loved.
What if it’s just a bunch of cool actors doing cool shit courtesy of a cool director who can get any damn thing made even in the Franchise Era that actually says nothing at all about the political uncertainties of our time or 1969 or any other time?

One thing that most reviews of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood don't quite get at is how the movie is very rueful, self-critical and (deliberately) ambiguous. @Jo_Livingstone's essay is valuable for highlighting this: newrepublic.com/article/154591…
The negative view of Once Upon a Time would be that it's mythologizing its heroes, but since that mythologizing is so clearly at odds with history I think it functions as Utopian art does (according to Jameson): as a critique of inadequacy of the real.
One clue as to the intent is the title, which is not just an allusion to Sergio Leone but also to fairytales.

Tarantino loves two things: "cinema" in some abstract way, and sadistic violence. Consequently, the "cinema" that he loves concretely is the metagenre of, you know, very violent movies: classical westerns, samurai films, war pictures, gangster sagas, the world of the grindhouse.
His vaunted love for craft, and for pastiche or homage or reference, is sort of enjoyable & critics love/are flattered by it, but it is pretty obviously a sublation of his pleasure not in cinematic craft but in cinematic violence. That pleasure far exceeds craft or tribute...

Someone vandalized a Los Angeles billboard ad for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. They replaced Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio with Jeffrey Epstein and Roman Polanski and changed the name of the movie to Once Upon a Time in Pedowood
