Recently in my 'Words of the Day' I've been building up a basic ID guide to some of the flowers & plants of wayside & verge; their appearance, names, lore etc. I thought I'd gather them all together in a thread; please do add your own species & photos to help build it. Here goes.
The splendidly spiky Teasel, with its lavender "halos" of blossom.
Quaking-Grass, shivering its hundreds of tiny hearts in the breeze.
Scabious -- Field & Devil's Bit, its pale purple pincushions still holding their colour deep into autumn.
Mallow -- a plant of glorious, gratuitous colour & edible leaves.
Ribwort Plantain, with its lightbulb-filament flowers & its bee-sting soothing leaves.
Ox-Eye Daisy, the fallen moon, filling meadows & paths with its wide-eyed wonder.
Wild Marjoram, scent of southern summers.
Tough knapweed with its bullet-proof head & its punk-crown of purple, surprising soother of wounds.
And bindweed & honeysuckle, twining opposites, the yin & yang of hedgerow vines.
