My column today looks at the veto of the Endo Act, and the PCSO operations shutdown as self-inflicted situations. Endo, because the bill wasn't supervised; PCSO because it got out of hand in a contest to be Lord of the Flies within its faction-ridden management.

Take a deep breath and step back. There is a logical explanation for (most) everything. You just have to look hard enough with an open mind and ask the relevant questions. So, here are some readings (quotes) to help in post-mortem each voter should undertake after each election.
First start with Randy David and his summary of where he believed we, as an electorate/society, stood back in 2009. Ask yourself if the fundamental tensions/problems he identified have been resolved or gotten more intense. Note David's and Mangahas' observations on protesting.
Consider political dynasties having an increasingly difficult time surviving, even if they cut deals with each other to reduce competition (when they fail, they go extinct, see Estrada in San Juan/Manila). Some years back Randy David suggested dynasties aren't the core problem.

Some thoughts on the coming election, which I invite you to read. (A thread.) 2019 is a mid-term election, and like all mid-terms, the senate results will serve as a referendum on the sitting president. Why is this so? Because every president has controlled the House of Reps.
This means, if a president passes the mid-term referendum, they have a chance to get more legislation passed through both houses while a president who fails the mid-term referendum will have a hard time getting what they want, for example charter change or in investigations.
But senate's composition also matters in other ways. It was designed to have a national perspective versus local one that reps. (logically) have. That's why reforms like RH or FOI pass easily in the Senate but often fail in the House. But that requires senators capable of vision.
