If the UK does indeed prioritise an open border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, then a fully-fledged free trade agreement between the UK and US could only ever apply to Great Britain.

Trade-offs.
It is not as if this issue is unknown. I wrote about it in September 2017, for example.

But it does make me wonder if, at some point in the near future, what the UK's response will be if Trump says something along the lines of "There's this problem with Northern Ireland, but we'll do a deal with England for sure."
