Things I learned through working on my map of ‘nouveau power’ - Dods Group, organiser of public sector conferences such as Civil Service Live, is now owned and controlled by Lord Ashcroft...
He owns it through Political Holdings Ltd - his vehicle for funding right-wing publishing, including blogs such as 'Conservative Home’, and Biteback publishing which published his book that sought to smear Cameron...
There is also a crossover of directors with Impellam, Ashcroft's contract staffing company that seeks to benefit from privatising provision of health and education services...
So what does all this say about the mission behind the content of Dods conferences for the public sector now? Where does editorial control of the agenda sit? What power do conferences have in shaping the discussion and policy about issues of privatisation and outsourcing?
This was from a quick bit of lunchtime research. I’ll be updating the map with all the info tonight, and will blog it

I now have enough data in my Nouveau Power map to begin experimenting with network analysis metrics to start telling the story behind the data… kumu.io/steveparks/nou…
I’m starting with the simplest approach possible - just colouring each type of entity, and sizing based on degree of connectedness. Now as I put more data in I can monitor how the story of the map evolves and extend the analysis as necessary
There’s still plenty more data to add, but it’s amazing how stories are already making themselves clear… look at the connections between the Conservatives and the cluster of far right campaign groups at 55 Tufton Street for example… or Lord Ashcroft’s sphere of influence

The professional politicians have done an excellent job of splitting up the issues to keep the citizens fighting with each other so we don’t focus on the fact that they are the problem, not us.
The professional wrestling promoters know that good fighting evil and prompting the audience to be involved in the action will keep people engaged. Our career politicians know it, too.

Without a crisis to engage the public, the career politician is less significant.

The Mideast is doomed. #Egypt alone needs to create 700,000 jobs EVERY SINGLE YEAR to absorb the new job seekers out its 98 million population. A third of this population already live below the poverty line (482 Egyptian Pound a month, which is less than $ 1 a day) ===>
2-The seeds of the #Viciouscircle that the Mideast region finds itself in today were planted at least 5 decades ago. Excessive public spending without matching revenues were the catalyst to a faulty & dangerous incentive system that helped to balloon populations beyond control
3-A governance system that was ostensibly put in place to help the poor ended up being a built-in factory for poverty generation. Excessive subsidies helped misallocate resources & mask the true cost of living for households. Correlation between family size and income was lost
