A thread on my too short training camp visit with the New York #Jets ...
1. Ryan Kalil addition is big. He could have gone elsewhere. Others would have jumped at him. That Kalil chose #Jets speaks to the new management making strides with their pitch. Part of anchoring this regime will be a culture sell and Kalil is a culture/program guy. He’s a win.
2. More on Kalil: I think his net positive for Sam Darnold and #Jets will be similar to what Max Unger did for Russell Wilson initially in Seattle. Making sure line protections are right, dialing in the unit’s chemistry, anchoring a combo with the guards that should be very good.
3. #Jets are excited about the possibilities of Le’Veon Bell mismatches, but they’re also amped about what they’ve seen so far from Ty Montgomery. They’re very optimistic about what he can do in Gase’s scheme. They’ll also get both Montgomery and Bell on the field together a bit.
4. #Jets believe second year TE Chris Herndon will be a high impact, high priority target for Sam Darnold. They’re disappointed in his 4-game suspension. That will hurt, especially with a tough 6 game slate to start. But he might have the talent to become an elite every down TE.
5. Young guys not named Quinnen Williams who have #Jets excited: WRs Tim White/Greg Dortch (many preseason looks ahead); CB Kyron Brown (possibly a regular rotation guy already); OT Chuma Edoga/LB Jachai Polite (both high end talents, but both still learning to be detail guys).
6. #Jets are feeling like guard Kelechi Osemele is headed for a big rebound this year. Apparently his weight is down below 310 pounds and he’s as healthy as he’s been in years. GM Joe Douglas saw him at his height with #Ravens and it sounds like Osemele is getting that form back.
7. #Jets Sam Darnold got into a normal rest rhythm this offseason. His arm strength has shown positive gains and Darnold is getting into the more granular aspects of core/lower body fitness. Some of it is similar to what Brees/Rodgers did early in their careers. Results are good.
8. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is the same as ever. He’s throwing the #Jets offense curveballs in practice, challenging Darnold and Gase, talking a LOT of trash, engaging fans and media. It will be interesting to see where this goes for a guy who draws a huge spotlight.
9. Say what you want about former GM Mike Maccagnan, but he didn’t leave a bare cupboard. #Jets talent is a bit underrated by people who don’t know the roster and there are some nice young pieces to build around. Maccagnan didn’t get it done, but he didn’t totally fail, either.
