Democracy is a very delicate system. It survives when our Constitutional state organs are strong and social activism is high and robust. It requires a very strong criminal justice system to buttress it and to maintain law and order. We need all these to work
in synergy for the citizens to enjoy peaceful life and thrive. But the head of Hawks needs additional 2000 personnel to deal with the volume of work. The SAPS also needs more personnel especially in Cape Town. The NPA is chronically understaffed
Yet the state system is over-staffed in all other areas. What is needed to correct this is courageous leadership and decisions making. It is now 18 months into the New Dawn. Law and order continues to decay and erode. Perpetrators roam the streets free..
without bother. The raids in Jnb CBD in the past 2days are manifest examples of collapsed law and order. The mayor has consistently fought to maintain law and order alone. We finally saw a concerted action in these CBD raids. But we also saw spectacle..
as the Premier and Min of Police played to the gallery in front of TV cameras. It was their moment of glory 18 months into New Dawn. Contraband goods and undocumented immigrants are not confined to Jnb. Go to Witbank, Nelspruit, Pillow and etc.
Why has law and order been allowed to erode and collapse in all these areas? Who is benefiting from the chaos? Why has government delayed or failed to act at least in the past 18 months? Why should business invest in such conditions? Reflect.
We often see these spectacles when local elections are in the horizon. Why was the mayor Not part of the leadership team in front of the cameras? Clearly he would dilute a key ANC moment of spectacle. All these silly things happen as the citizens
continue to suffer the pressure of lawlessness. Moving freely in their communities has deteriorated to a dream. The Cape Flats is a case in point. How and why should citizens live in war zones in a democratic SA. Going to the Jnb is now very risky
Clearly our democracy is under serious stress from crime and the breakdown in law and order. And the ANC continues to dither and project policy incoherence under the archaic and sclerotic Tripartite Alliance. Where is leadership?
