1/ I am appalled and outraged by #HongKong police and their escalating violence and brutality towards peaceful protesters and journalists. I pray in particular for the young woman who was shot in her eye with a beanbag round at close range.
2/ The whole world is watching in real time. We know the truth and we will not be fooled by attempts to demonize these protesters. #HongKong authorities should not adopt mainland China’s tactics of suppression.
3/ I call on #CarrieLam to immediately begin a dialogue with protest leaders to address their legitimate grievances including withdrawing the extradition bill, ending police violence & granting universal suffrage. The only way forward is peaceful dialogue – not more violence.
4/ I also call on the Trump administration to stop sending mixed signals on #HongKong. Instead, they should suspend transfers of police & crowd control equipment to Hong Kong police.

America must be on the side of those peacefully protesting for democracy and the rule of law.

Conflict between state & federal law means legal cannabis businesses are forced to operate on a cash-only basis creating a serious public safety risk.
Now, we need to decriminalize and deschedule cannabis while providing reinvestment, restorative justice & expungement to persons & communities of color that continue to be adversely impacted by the War on Drugs.

September is back to school month — but it's also #HungerActionMonth.
That's why this week, I introduced the bipartisan Healthy Breakfasts Help Kids Learn Act alongside @RodneyDavis to help make sure that no child in America goes to class on an empty stomach.
@RodneyDavis Nearly 1 in 9 children here in Massachusetts is food insecure. America is the richest country in the history of this world – yet there are 13 million kids here that deal with hunger or food insecurity.

That’s a national disgrace.
My sisters are both public school teachers. I hear from them all the time that when it comes to helping kids learn, healthy food is just as important as a textbook. We have millions of kids in this country who can’t concentrate because they are showing up to class hungry.

Today I voted YES on the Protecting and Securing Florida’s Coastline Act (H.R. 205) and The Coastal and Marine Economies Protection Act (H.R. 1941) to #ProtectOurCoast from offshore drilling.
These bills are a direct rejection of this administration’s handouts to corporate polluters.

Trump has surrounded himself with big oil allies & now he’s trying to open up some of the most vulnerable stretches of our coastline to drilling. Enough is enough!
The bottom line is that Americans don’t want more offshore drilling. We’ve seen what happens with catastrophies like the BP spill that went on for months & spewed 200 million gallons of oil onto our beaches.

It’s time to #ProtectOurCoasts and put #PeopleOverPolluters.

It is alarming to watch the #HongKong police with support from Beijing intensify their use of force against the protesters and label them violent criminals.
I urge Carrie Lam to meet with protest leaders to listen and act on their legitimate grievances including withdrawing the extradition bill, ending police violence & granting universal suffrage.
The people of Hong Kong are trying to preserve the promise of One Country - Two Systems. If we don’t speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out elsewhere.

I grew up in South London in the Thatcher years. There was a lot of hostility towards the police. When I moved to #HongKong in the early 90s, I was struck by the genial relations between people and the police. They were generally liked and respected 1/
#HongKong people were proud that their police force was not like the Public Security Bureau of China. There were always bad eggs but generally, the force was considered clean and professional. People trusted them 2/
I covered and attended many protests over the years. In the past they were almost always peaceful and there was little aggro from the police. This began to change in the CYLeung years as Beijing tightened the screws and society became more polarised 3/

HK will likely ignite again on June 12 when the extradition bill is scheduled for second reading. Calls for actions have are now circulating in Telegram groups. Not heeding the popular will is going to have dire long term consequences for the HK government.
