In 24 hours, this petition to ban driven grouse shooting has gained 24,000 signatures.
Yet another sign that this is where all the momentum is. So why the heck is @Natures_Voice (the RSPB) still calling for "licensing" it? Wake up RSPB, and lead!

Why do our big conservation NGOs seem to be asleep on the job, while individual ecologists and tiny groups do the hard work?
The RSPB calling for driven grouse shooting to be licensed is the equiv of Greenpeace calling for coal power to be licensed. It should be unthinkable.
We are a nation of wildlife lovers. But the big conservation groups have completely failed to translate this love into mass action against the ecological destruction taking place all round us. They are conservative and timid where they should be bold, radical and decisive.

I really hope this film doesn’t do for alligators what Jaws did for sharks.
It seems extraordinary to me that, in the midst of mass extinction, such 1950s style schlock is still being made.
Hundreds of horror films have been made, premised on the idea of too much wildlife (The Birds, The Swarm etc etc). But as The Road showed, the real dystopian horror is too little.
The Road (well the book at least - the film flinched) is a brilliant thought experiment about what would happen to us if the biosphere vanishes. It is far more chilling that any nature-out-of-control narrative.

These are tough times for beef farmers. The sector seems to be collapsing in the UK. Rather than endlessly propping it up, it would be a better use of our money to pay the farmers to do something else on their land. Preferably #rewilding. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla…
With the amount we have spent subsidising farming in the UK, we could have bought all the agricultural land in Britain several times over. Yet we have almost no say in how the land - or the money - is used. This is profoundly undemocratic.
This is our money. It should be used for the benefit of society as a whole, rather than just for the benefit of one commercial sector, which happens to be among the most destructive on Earth. Where we are taxed, we should be represented. Yet our views don't seem to count.

There's been a fair amount of twitter commentary over the #Momentum claim story, so here's a thread unpacking the various concepts a little.
1/ For background. It's reported that Momentum is declining to pay a sizeable death claim on a policy where the cause of death was murder. The claim is refuted because of non-disclosure of diabetes.
2/ Let's start with some basic workings of life insurance. The only time your health status matters is the point at which you are buying the cover. It is at this point that you need to be honest and forthright in your insurance application.

Après l'explosion de l'usine en février 43, les Allemands ne restent pas sans rien faire. Après des mois d'efforts, la production d'eau lourde peu reprendre. Les Américains bombardent le site en novembre 43, interrompant de nouveau la production.
Les Allemands décident alors d'abandonner l'usine, non sans emporter le petit stock d'eau lourde produit depuis quelques mois, et surtout les équipements et les matériaux permettant de reprendre la production chez eux.

Et pour fabriquer de l’eau lourde, ils ont une solution toute prête qui en produit déjà depuis 1934 : l’usine Vermork, une énorme centrale hydroélectrique située à Rjukan, au nord du Telemark en Norvège (laquelle a été envahie par les nazis en avril 1940).
Ce que les nazis ne savent pas c’est que les résistants norvégiens — et notamment Leif Tronstad qui est aussi un chimiste spécialiste de l’eau lourde et connait parfaitement l’usine — ont tuyauté les anglais sur leurs projets.
