First published in the pre-photographic age, Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours was the preeminent guide to color and its classification for artists, scientists, naturalists, and anthropologists in the 19th-century.
Without an image for reference, the book provided immense handwritten detail describing where each specific shade could be found on an animal, plant, or mineral.
Charles Darwin even used the guide during his voyage to the Madeira, Canary, and Cape Verde islands on the H.M.S. Beagle.

According to Time, Presley, a collector of police badges, wanted a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and to be named a “Federal Agent at Large.”
In a letter, Elvis informed Nixon that he'd be staying at the Washington Hotel under the alias Jon Burrows. "I will be here for as long as it takes to get the credentials of a federal agent."
Elvis arrived at the White House bearing a gift—a Colt .45 pistol mounted in a display case that he had plucked off the wall of his Los Angeles mansion.

What of Mileva Marić-Einstein?
Mileva Marić-Einstein was Albert Einstein's wife. She was the only woman in the Physics department at Zurich Polytechnic when Albert Einstein studied.

In fact, she was the only person to score higher than Einstein in mathematics at the entrance exam. Such was her brilliance.

On Mother’s Day & every day, let’s kill off fewer moms in science fiction & fantasy.

Yes, it’s easier for a protagonist to have adventures w/o her—or to go on quests to avenge her. What living mom would let her kid endanger their life like that?

But isn’t killing her a cop-out?
Let’s stop using women’s pain and women’s deaths as catalysts for (often male) heroes’ stories.

Let’s stop treating women as motivators of protagonists’ growth, as obstacles in their journeys, as objects to be won or rescued—or, as with many dead mothers, as simply irrelevant.
They say a mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces on earth. We always hear stories of mothers going to extraordinary lengths for their kids.

Let’s see more of that in fiction, in #SFF.

Let’s see more women as the heroines of their own stories—as leaders, not damsels.
