commons majority he seeks, he could repeal that legislation in a single day before 31 October and could insist Lords do not block repeal (because repeal would be in Tory manifesto). So we are heading for a general election as a proxy for a referendum, with Tories campaigning...
to Brexit - deal or no deal - on 31 October. I really can't see how Labour could refuse to sanction and fight an election on those terms.

Lord Pannick invites court to rule @BorisJohnson improperly used royal prerogative to suspend parliament on basis of principle rather than precedent. Which - and I may be wrong - feels like slightly shaky ground.
The counter-argument of course would be that @BorisJohnson has created a precedent which the Supreme Court may regard as heinous and that it should rule as illegal to rein in the potential for the executive to become over-mighty

Can No 10's new approach to Northern Irish backstop break the #Brexit impasse? Tldr; it's a tall order - politically and technically.

To start with, let's be clear what No 10 is/isn't talking about.

They are ruling out an "NI-only" backstop which leaves Northern Irealand in EU's customs area and single market for the areas necessary to deliver a fully open border. /2
This is the NI-only backstop @MichelBarnier has in his bottom draw.

It was proposed in early 2018 and rejected by UK because it turned NI into a regulatory exclave of the EU.

Have you heard of #Hotelling’s Law? In a two party system, it says that you get most votes by minimising the political distance between the parties. It’s worked well in the past, but it’s about to bring an end to both #Labour and the #Tory party. 1/n

Hotelling’s law worked really well for Tony #Blair. #Thatcher had moved the Tory party to the right, so #NewLabour had an opportunity to increase its vote share by also moving rightwards. 2/n
Politics had shifted. Both parties held broadly similar policies. Blair’s political stance, although to the left of Thatcher’s, was much further right than any Labour leader previously (or since). Labour was able to capture ground that the Tories had left unguarded. 3/n

May has lost badly enough that talk of MV4 looks pretty optimistic.

The door to May 22 extension closes...and the one to a long extension opens, with #EUCO in April 10.

That requires two things... /2
1) That the U.K. agrees to hold European Parliament elections on May 23-26

2) Per Mar #EUCO concs, that the U.K. “indicates a way forward”. /3

The stock statement in response to #Brexit petitions needs to be called out. "There must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door, & no 2nd Ref" is fundamentally UNCONSTITUTIONAL as it binds Parliament and the People too.

/1.
Parliamentary sovereignty means one Parlt cannot bind another. This invalidates the "cannot reverse #Brexit" subtext of the above statement, as we've had a general election since #Article50 was triggered, so technically this is a different Parlt not bound by the previous one. /2.
The idea the People cannot speak again is ludicrous. It'd take a MAJORITY to #ExitFromBrexit. How is that undemocratic?Given the false prospectus on which #Brexit was sold, the chicanery & cheating of #VoteLeave & Brexit impact, it's the DUTY of Govt to give us #FinalSay Ref. /3.
