What’s amazing about this piece on what “they” supposedly won’t tell you about slavery is it basically makes my argument — America was not exceptional as we’re taught. It was just one of many nations for which slavery was foundational to society. So, thanks, @NRO. 🤷🏽‍♀️
But also, how many of these other slave nations were founded on the individual rights of humankind, on the premise that all men were created equal, that they would lead a government of the people, for the people, by the people. THIS is what makes American slavery exceptional.
And, lastly, as my piece clearly states, the slavery practiced here and in the Americas was unprecedented. It was racial, heritable and permanent. People were born into slavery as were all their descensants for generations simply because of their race.
That type of slavery, that turned people into property, had never existed in the world. But, keep telling me how unexceptional our founders were as if you just dropped an expose.
And you know what was *exceptional*? The depravity of the system of racial apartheid this country created after slavery — one so depraved, rigid and codified that Hitler used it as inspiration. Care to talk about that?
