Seeing lots of OUTDATED or WRONG info about the Disney & Sony negotiations with no links to justify their claims. So here’s a thread (w/ links to the actual reports) for the most common #Spiderman (and his friends) misconceptions about the deal. Feel free to share: #SaveSpiderman
“Disney wants 50/50 from Sony”

Outdated news. Latest reports say Disney initially offered 25%, but instead of countering, Sony decided to not do anything for half a year (negotiating tactic?) Disney then raised to 50% to wake Sony up and start negotiating

“Sony said they would be willing to do 25/75”

Variety ran a story saying Sony’s Tom Rothman would accept 25%. However latest update via Deadline says the 25% was Disney’s original offer which was on the table for half a year, but Rothman didn’t take it

”Sony came back and offered 30/70 but Disney refused”

This misinformation was infamously spread by a YouTuber, but it’s the other way around. Disney came back and made the 30% offer, with Sony refusing, likely wanting the original offer back on the table

”Disney altered the deal”

They never did. The old deal had expired after Far From Home. Sony has always wanted a completely NEW deal with Disney where MCU Spider-man (Tom Holland) can show up in both the MCU and Sony’s own Spider-universe and vice versa

“Disney is greedy wanting the rights to all of Sony’s properties like Venom”

In actually, it’s the other way around. it’s Sony who’s been wanting and asking Disney to include all their Spider-verse properties especially Venom to be part of the MCU brand

“Why Disney asked for a higher cut”

Sony saw being part of the MCU brand makes more $ so they want a new deal w/ their universe being a part of the MCU. Feige produced both Spidey movies and made Sony $2B but was not getting a producer’s fee. Enter Disney

“Sony doesn’t get a dime from Disney for 100% of the Spider-man merchandise”

Back in 2011 (separate from the 2015 film sharing deal) Sony sold all their merchandising rights to Disney with an ongoing provision that Disney pays Sony $30M a year in royalty

@SonyPictures official Twitter statement stated that Kevin Feige would be too busy and not have the time to continue working for Sony on Spider-man”

This claim was refuted by @Deadline’s latest report
deadline.com/2019/08/spider…
“Original 5% deal was already too much”

Note: it’s only 5% of 1st dollar. The Kevin Feige produced Far From Home made Sony $1.2 BILLION. How much of that went to Feige & Disney? $1.96 Million. Add Homecoming and that’s $2 BILLION Sony, $4.5M Feige/Disney fortune.com/2019/08/21/spi…
“Sony never got money from the Avengers box office”

Sony also did NOT work on any of the Avenger films. Disney borrowed Spider-Man. Sony borrowed Iron Man, Fury, but most importantly they borrowed Kevin Feige from Disney to produce and work on their films
indiewire.com/2019/08/sony-s…
“Sony doesn’t need Disney to make money off Spider-man”

Sony makes MORE money off Spider-man with Disney

Last 2 Spidey films with just @SonyPictures cost more: $420m and made less: $1.46B

Last 2 MCU Spidey films with @DisneyStudios cost less: $335m but made a lot more: $2.00B
